The first Amateur Singles Championship was held in the 1931-32 season, for a cup donated by the Jesters Club, founded four years previously by J.F.Burnet. The Jesters Club Cup bears many of the most famous names in Rugby Fives and was won 23 times by Wayne Enstone of the Manchester YMCA, one of the most remarkable records in sport. Since 1989 the RFA has held regional qualifying rounds, followed by a finals weekend for the top 16 players. The event is now known as the National Singles Championship.

The Rugby Fives Competition for the Cyriax Cup was open to club pairs (maximum three pairs per club) playing singles and doubles from 1926 to 1929. From 1930 it was confined to doubles only, and it became the Amateur Doubles Championship from 1934. The trophy was donated by Dr. Edgar Cyriax, the W.G.Grace of fives, whose best playing days were over before championships started. He had been a remarkable player, reputedly remaining unbeaten in singles play for 37 years, between 1890 and 1927. The Cyriax Cup has been characterised by several winning sequences, notably those of John Pretlove and Dennis Silk (1956-59), Mike Elliott and John Watkinson (1962-64), David Gardner and Stuart Reid (1970-72 and 1974), John East and Wayne Enstone (1975-79), Ian Fuller and Dave Hebden (1980-85 and 1987-90), Wayne Enstone and Neil Roberts (1991-99), John Beswick and Neil Roberts (2000-03), and most recently Hamish Buchanan and Robin Perry (2004-11). The event is normally held at Alleyn’s School in Dulwich and is now known as the National Doubles Championship. For a list of winners and runners-up 1926-1995 click here

The National Ladies Championships were initiated by Alastair Mackenzie as a single event in December 1985 at St. Paul’s School. The first championship entry consisted of three Winchester fives players, one Eton fives player and two squash players. Since those days the average entry has grown considerably. Paula Smith won the championship 11 times but her record has now been surpassed by Claire Knowles, who has won 12 times (as at 2015). In December 1992 Denise Hall-Wilton introduced a doubles competition. Both trophies were presented by David Barnes in 1994 from the proceeds of an RFA ‘100 Club’ jackpot. Long ago, in 1933, Dr Edgar Cyriax had presented a challenge cup for ladies’ pairs, to be played for against a team of men under the American Handicap System. Times and attitudes have moved on since then. Since 2015-16 the championships are played in January, hence no result listed for 2014.

The British Universities Championships, the brainchild of David Gardner, were first held at Bedford Modern School in 1960 as a singles, doubles and team event held over 4 days. Over the years different organisations such as the Universities Athletic Union, the British Universities Sports Federation, the British Universities Sports Association and British Universities and Colleges Sport have acted as umbrella authorities, but throughout the whole of its existence until 2018 the competition was primarily organised by David Gardner. The event is now under the aegis of the RFA. The trophy for singles was donated by the RFA in 1967; the one for doubles by David Arnold in 1976. Click here for records covering the years 1960-1995.

The West of England Championships were first played in the season of 1962-63 as separate singles (November) and doubles (March) competitions. From the 1970-71 season onwards both singles and doubles were played on the same weekend, in the autumn. The principal venue has been Clifton College, Bristol, with matches played on the now defunct courts at Colston’s School and Bristol Grammar School. Some years since 2002 the competition has been played at Sherborne School in Dorset. Click here for records covering the years 1962-1995

The South West Championships originated from the Exeter Fives Week – a coaching course run by Wayne Enstone in July – and were first contested at Blundell’s School in Tiverton and Exeter University. Now the sole venue is Blundell’s. These championships, the first of the season, are unusual in that Singles and Doubles are played on the Saturday, with the finals of both events played on the Sunday morning, while other competitors take part in a American Doubles competition. The trophies were donated by Stuart Watson.

The first North of England Doubles Championship was coupled with the Heath Old Boys Open Doubles and was played as such in the period 1936 to 1950. In 1953 a separate championship was introduced with new trophies for both singles (Ferens Trophy) and doubles (Fuller Cup). The North West Championships were originally known as the Lancashire Open, and then they became for a while the Greater Manchester County Open. The idea of running a tournament at the Manchester YMCA was put to Fred Beswick, the first organiser, by David Gardner at the North of England Championships in 1968. The original trophies were donated by the YMCA Club, and the present doubles trophy was the gift of Fred Beswick and Danny McGregor in 1991, after the old cup had been given to Ian Fuller and David Hebden on winning it for the tenth time. Wayne Enstone won the singles an astonishing 27 times in succession. Wayne donated the current singles trophy. Click here for records covering the years 1968-1995

The Yorkshire Open Doubles was first played in 1936, when it was coupled with the North of England Doubles championships and known until 1950 as the North of England and Heath Old Boys Open Doubles. The trophy was presented by the Right Honourable J.H.Whitley, M.P., an old boy of Heath School, Halifax and Speaker of the House of Commons. The new North of England Championships did not commence until 1953. The change of name from the Heath Old Boys Open Doubles to the Yorkshire Open Doubles came with a move from Halifax to Giggleswick School, Settle in 2002. In 2014 organiser John Hawke introduced a singles competition, played on the Sunday. Click here for records covering the years 1936-2003

The National Schools Championships were inaugurated in 1930 and have been contested every year since, with the exception of the war years. The Jesters’ Cup is awarded for the U18 Singles, the Mappin Cup for the Doubles. In 1975 Under 16 competitions were started: for the singles the Harpur Cup is awarded and for the doubles the impressive Marchant Cup, previously contested for by the London Grammar Schools. Under 14 competitions were started in 1995, with the trophies donated by Peter King (singles) and David Barnes (doubles). The National Under 13 Schools championships (formerly Prep Schools) arose from an initiative in 1985 by the President of the RFA, Alastair Mackenzie. All events are now played at St. Paul’s School. The West of England Schools Championships were first played in Bristol in 1959. The organiser was Adrian Codrington, an old Bristolian who had started the West of England Rugby Fives Club in 1956. The trophies (the Kemp Cup for singles and the Punchard Cup for doubles) were donated by eponymous Bristolians. For the first eight years the winners came from West of England schools, but thereafter players from further afield began to make their mark. In 1967 a Colts (Under 16) event was initiated, with competitors playing for the Gardner Cup (singles) and the RFA Bowl (doubles). The event has been variously held at Bristol Grammar School, Colston’s School, Clifton College and Marlborough College but is now held at Sherborne School in Dorset. A splendid trophy was donated by Tom and Joan Wood. Held in its early years at a variety of venues, since 1983 the final round have been played over one weekend at the Bank of England Sports Club and St. Paul’s School. Teams are composed of four players, with substitutions allowed between rounds.

The Old Boys Championship (commonly known as the Owers Trophy) was started in 2004 to encourage Old Boys Clubs to enlist members, especially those who have just left school. The trophy was donated by the RFA and named in honour of Tony Owers, an Old Whitgiftian and one of the Association’s principal benefactors. Until 2015 teams were composed of four players, with substitutions allowed between rounds. In 2015, in an attempt to boost the number of clubs entering, the composition of teams was altered to become three per team.

The University Match (most frequently referred to as the Varsity Match) was first played in 1925 and has been contested every year since, with the exception of the war years. It has been played at a variety of venues, but in recent years the event has been held at St. Paul’s School. Sides consist of eight players, four of whom contest singles in the morning; in the afternoon a further series of doubles matches takes place. On occasions there has been a Second IV match between the Oxford Beavers and the Cambridge Sparrows. In 2015 an inaugural Women’s Varsity Match was held. The President’s Cup is a doubles tournament run on a Sunday shortly before Christmas. Members of the RFA are invited to enter as individuals and there is then a draw for partners. The trophy was presented at the inaugural event in 1958 by Geoffrey Rimmer, the first President of the Club. The Ladies’ Winchester Fives Championship was initiated by Michael Haslam as a single event in 1988 at Sedbergh School. He presented the Crayke Cup, named after the Yorkshire village in which he lived, to the winner, Paula Smith, who remained unbeaten in the singles until 2004. In 1990 Denise Hall-Wilton started a doubles competition, for which she donated the Bradfield Bowl, a trophy with a four-sided wooden base, one side for each of the four venues at which the championships are held: Bradfield, Winchester, Sedbergh and Malvern.

The Whitgift Doubles was started by Chris Jones in August 2003. The tournament was designed to encourage younger players (16-25) to become more involved in the senior fives ‘circuit’. by pairing them with the country’s best players. The event has been discontinued partly because of the pressure of other events in the fives calendar but partly because of the success of the RFA in involving more younger players in the game generally.
