STOP PRESS Four schools contested this event, held this year at Tonbridge School and organised by Henry Swales, to whom many thanks for taking on this task and providing such a comprehensive report.
Henry Swales reports: The South East Regional Schools’ Championships returned to Tonbridge School for a day of highly competitive Fives. Teams braved wet external conditions and the vicissitudes of M25 traffic, with strong representation from Tonbridge, Alleyn’s, Christ’s Hospital and, new this year, St Paul’s. The standard of play was consistently high, with a number of closely contested matches across both the singles and doubles competitions.
In the U18 Singles, the knockout stages produced a strong semi-final line-up featuring players from Tonbridge and Alleyn’s. In the first semi-final, M. Arie (Alleyn’s) advanced after a commanding performance, while O. Carroll (Tonbridge) came through the opposite side of the draw. The final proved an excellent match, with Carroll managing to defeat Arie 15–12, securing the senior title for Tonbridge. In the 3rd/4th play-off, H. Thomas (Tonbridge) overcame S. Khurana (Alleyn’s) 15–11. The Plate competition was also keenly contested, with Oscar (Christ’s Hospital) defeating D. Radia (Tonbridge) 15–13 in the final.
In the U18 Doubles, the Tonbridge pairing of O. Carroll & H. Thomas performed strongly throughout the knockout rounds and carried their form into the final, defeating Arie & Khurana (Alleyn’s) 11–8, 11–9. The Plate event was won by Seddon & Radia (Tonbridge), who beat Katz & Graham-Maw (St Paul’s) 11–4, 11–3.
The U16 competitions were equally competitive. In the U16 Singles Main draw, Alleyn’s players featured prominently, culminating in an all-Alleyn’s final in which T. Green defeated R. Kohashi-Khan 15–3. Third place went to F. McAllister (Alleyn’s), who beat H. Wilson (Tonbridge) 15–7. Supporting competitions were well contested: the Plate was won by Kavin (Christ’s Hospital), who beat Ryuu V. (Tonbridge) 15–11, while the Bowl went to Quinn (Christ’s Hospital) after an 11–8 victory over M. Choi (St Paul’s).
The U16 Doubles competition also provided strong matches, culminating in an all-Alleyn’s final in which Kohashi-Khan & McAllister defeated Green & Negyal 15–9. The Plate competition was won by Thor & Quinn (Christ’s Hospital), who overcame Mason & Kavin (Christ’s Hospital) 11–8 in a closely fought final.
Overall, the championships provided a full programme of closely contested matches, played in excellent spirit across all schools.
