13 players contested this Challenger event, open to players outside the top 16, which was played on the courts at Rugby School. A previous winner of a Challenger on the Cambridge courts, Anthony Goodwin, was seeded highest but was knocked out in the semi-final by Gwydion Wiseman, twice the winner of the U18 Schools title. In the other half of the draw were two members of the Executioners club, doubtless very familiar with each other’s game: Penn Chai and Terry McElvaney. It was Penn who won their meeting this time and went on to face Gwydion in the final, which Gwydion won in straight games. Patrick Harrison won the Plate for first match losers and Chris Davey the Bowl for quarter-final losers.

Warmest thanks to Rugby School for hosting the event and providing such excellent facilities and especially to master in charge Ben Lane for the generous provision of coffee, cakes and sandwiches, which were most appreciated by the players.
