Draw published for South East Open singles tournament

South East Open Championships

Christ’s Hospital School, Horsham, 18/19th August

The draw for this Saturday’s South East Open singles championship has been published – and it promises to be another cracker.

The top three players in the national rankings – Dan Tristao, Ed Kay and Will Ellison – are all competing, and the seedings predict a Kay/Tristao final. However, there’s no guarantee of that, as there are plenty more high-quality players in the field and this event has a history of surprises.

It was in this event last year, for example, that Ed scored his first win over Will in an open singles championship. So, the possible semi between Ed and Will this year – if it happens – promises to be a particular highlight. Will comes to Christs Hospital on the back of two titles at the South West Open, but it should be noted that an injury prevented Ed playing in the singles final, so there’s possibly a point to be proved there.

Elsewhere in the draw, fourth seed Ben Beltrami is seeded to face Dan in the semis, but with the likes of James Tilston, James Smith, Rob Whitehorn and Theo Parker also seeded, we should see great matches throughout the competition.

On top of that, among the unseeded players are Ed Hatton and big-hitting leftie Morgan Spillane, who must always be considered a threat on their home courts. Ben Chua, too, is more than capable of causing an upset, and top ladies player Louise Mathias shouldn’t be underestimated.

A full report of the event will be online as soon possible after the event, but watch the RFA’s Twitter feed for live updates during the day on Saturday.

The doubles championship will follow on Sunday. But, as the draw is in a President’s Cup style (with the best paired with the weakest, and the results in the Singles championship set to have a major influence on that), the draw will only be published on the day of the event.
