Oundle School
Sunday, 24th April 2022

Organiser Alex Smith reports: The National School Girls’ Tournament was back to its usual calendar slot early in the summer term, and a large number of excited players from 7 schools gathered at the excellent facilities of Oundle School on Sunday morning. I would like to thank Oundle School and their fives staff for kindly hosting the championship and also the coaches and parents from the participating schools for bringing such an excellent bunch of players and assisting on the day, and finally Bob Dolby and Chris Blakeley for their encouraging and supportive presence throughout the day.

The day began with a large number of singles group games in all age categories. The use of ‘rally scoring’ helped keep the games to schedule and proved popular with the players, as it avoided lengthy play with no score.

In the senior competition, as expected the person to watch was Camille Beattie from the City of Durham Club, playing above her age group. She duly made her way to the later stages, but not without fierce competition from a number of very impressive players from the Edinburgh Academy, Alleyn’s, Marlborough, Rugby and Eastbourne College. Both singles and doubles finals were superb demonstrations of the high quality of female fives playing at school age. City of Durham were pushed close in both by players from the Academy. Camille finished a deserving champion, taking the singles in an excellent match against Holly Brown, and the doubles with partner Imogen Wright, where they faced the Academy’s second pair, Louise Hawkins and Cecily Millar, in the final.

In the junior age groups, Alleyn’s and Edinburgh Academy were again able to demonstrate their strength in depth in reaching the finals, with Eastbourne also getting into the silverware in the plate, whilst the girls from Stamford made their mark in the U13.

At U16, Rosa Ogilvie & Olivia Smith from Edinburgh won out in the doubles, with Anna Chance & Annabelle McAllister of Alleyn’s giving them a tough game, whilst Rosa also took the prize against Anna in the singles. In the U14s, Anna Bailey of Edinburgh Academy similarly scored a singles win over Janice Ho of Alleyn’s, but in the doubles Janice with her partner Diva Tiwari gained revenge for Alleyns by taking the doubles in a hard-fought game against Anna and her partner Millie. In the U13s, the enthusiastic squad from Stamford held off the challenge from Alleyn’s in the doubles, with Bea Grindal & Tilly Stevens winning the group convincingly in the end, but honours were shared as, in the singles, Bea lost a tough final against the impressive Taylor-Rose Foo of Alleyn’s.

The day was, as ever, a fantastic celebration of fives playing and camaraderie, with all the players getting stuck into a long day of play with much laughter and excitement. Well done to everyone who took part.
